Lyonbiopôle, health cluster in the Lyon area
With Lyonbiopole, a global competitive cluster dedicated to the fight against infectious diseases, Lyon, along with Grenoble, is a global hub of excellence and innovation in diagnostics and vaccines. Designed as an R&D “factory” for multi-stakeholder projects, Lyonbiopole acts as an interface for industry and academic research. It is currently the leader and the one-stop shop for health in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Labeled “global competitive cluster” in 2005, Lyonbiopole now represents:
- 4 strategic areas of action: medicines for human use, veterinary drugs, in vitro diagnostics, medical devices and medical technologies.
- A positioning focused on infectious diseases, but also an objective to support projects and companies in the Life Sciences sector on other topics such as cancer, nutrition, metabolism and diseases of he nervous system.
- A community of 197 actors: 5 industrial actors, world leaders in their markets, 4 of which are the founding members of the cluster (Sanofi Pasteur, world leader in human vaccine, Merial, world leader in veterinary products, bioMérieux, #1 in bacteriological diagnostics, BD, medical and diagnostics leader), 176 innovative SMEs and ETIs, but also 16 competence centers, including the region’s 3 university hospitals.
- The cluster: stimulates innovation, supports the development of SMEs, encourages international development, and provides a high-level infrastructure offer.
