Finland’s Konecranes is to set up a data science laboratory in Lyon
Konecranes is one of three global providers of port cranes and lifting equipment and related services. The group employs 16,100 people in 50 countries, including approximately 750 in France, making it one of France’s leading Finnish investors. In 2018, its sales reached 3156 million euros.
In March 2019, Konecranes announced the creation of its world-class R&D centre in Lyon, to support the digital transformation of its products, services and operations. This R&D centre will work in the fields of predictive analysis, the computerised measurement of component wear, and predicting maintenance needs. The group has 20,000 connected devices worldwide with 600,000 active customers per digital lifecycle. They believe that creating value from data will profoundly transform the freight handling industry. This data will enable it to create new business models and added value for its customers.
Aderly and Business France helped Konecranes Data to set up their scientific laboratory in Lyon, in particular by presenting the local region’s strengths (economic environment, relevant field of expertise, competitive clusters and networks etc.), and an overview of available R&D funding, as well as by providing advice on human resources and employee mobility.
As France’s main industrial region and #2 digital hub, the Lyon metropolitan area was chosen for its expertise in the fields of AI, machine learning and industry 4.0. “We chose Lyon because the city offers a excellent advanced data research capabilities in an industrial environment” said Juha Pankakoski, Executive Vice President, Technology at Konecranes. Furthermore, with Université de Lyon, the Lyon region has a rich pool of data scientists and researchers which is key to the development of Konecranes’ project.
