From 12 March to 12 April, the Cité du Design in Saint-Etienne will host the 9th edition of the International Biennial Design Festival devoted to innovative and prospective design. Since 2010, Saint-Etienne has been a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network along with 11 other cities around the world and only three in Europe, including Berlin and Graz.

Over one month, the Biennial will include over sixty exhibitions and events (seminars, conferences, round tables etc.). The IN programme will include exhibitions at the Cité du Design and the Manufacture site as well as events in the city and its own museums. The OFF version of the biennial will offer events around the city as well as in the metropolitan area (Greater Lyon, CAPI, Vienne’Agglo).

The central theme of this event will be ‘The Meaning of Beauty’. It will encourage visitors to question the importance of form and the meaning it gives to function, use and quality of life. Moreover, a two-day forum will be devoted to innovation and there will be ‘laboratories’ for companies to ‘test’ their prototypes and innovative products on visitors!

The International Biennial Design Festival is produced by the Cité du Design, with the support of the city of Saint-Etienne, Saint-Etienne Métropole, Rhone-Alpes Regional Council and the Ministry of Culture and Communication. In 2013, the event received over 140,000 visitors.
