Established in 2003 by Silicon Valley engineers, Tesla Motors manufactures luxury electric sports cars. The brand set out to prove that it is possible to build an electric vehicle that performs as well as a petrol-engine vehicle. The company is already present in five European countries (Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Norway and France) and has already achieved sales of 769 million dollars in the second trimester of 2014.

The company’s first star model is a 100% electric engine saloon; the S Model, which is distinctive in terms of its performance and unprecedented battery autonomy. With this vehicle, the manufacturer expanded into the European market. Today, the company hopes to enlarge its range and continue its international development.

Now Tesla wants to set up in Lyon. Tesla Motors is looking for a site in the Lyon area for its new branch, due to open in 2015. In addition to a showroom and a maintenance centre, the manufacturer aims to accelerate its construction of new Tesla charging stations along France’s major motorways, and particularly around Lyon.

Lyon is part of a transition in terms of energy consumption and is seeking to develop more environmentally-friendly transport solutions. The city has already made a name for itself in this field by implementing its Bluely electric vehicle car-sharing service. The arrival of the American manufacturer will open the door for new developments in intelligent transport systems, which is a priority for Lyon Métropole.
