The figures for the tourism industry in Lyon in 2012, unveiled by the Lyon Tourist Office and Convention Bureau, were very positive, pointing to 2013 being an even better year for tourism in the city, which welcomes an average of 5.5 million tourists a year. In 2012, Greater Lyon became the second-leading French area for hotel accommodations, with 15,295 rooms, up 4.2% from 2011.

Business travel is a driver of economic vitality in Lyon, with some fifteen conventions and about fifty fairs scheduled for 2013, which should bring in several thousand participants.

Event-based tourism is also promising, with the Festival of Lights, the leading event of the capital of the Gauls. Indeed, the city will move in time with many events, such as the International Biennial of Contemporary Art, the Tour de France racing alongside the Rhone and Saone rivers this summer, and many more cultural activities.

Since 2010, over half of all visitors have been from a foreign country. The most represented country is Germany, with 10% of foreign tourists in Lyon, followed by Spain and Italy.

Visitors from more distant countries are increasingly numerous, with 47% of foreigners coming from places outside of Europe, proving that the efforts of ONLYLYON to promote the city worldwide are succeeding. There is an increase in the number of Russians (up 22%), Chinese (up 10%) and Japanese (up 5%).

What’s more, with the new direct flight between Lyon and Dubai, the Lyon metropolitan area is expecting to welcome more tourists from the Middle East. Finally, the launch of the high-speed train between Lyon and Barcelona, and a direct Eurostar train between Lyon and London, should also bring more tourism to the area.
