LOGISTICS: A EUROPEAN-WIDE PLATFORM

Rhône-Alpes is France’s second-largest region as a logistics hub and in terms of attracting warehouse sites.

4.5 million square meters of logistics space in the Lyon urban area

115,000 jobs in logistics activities

More than 3 million square meters of logistics premises

The Greater Lyon The Greater Lyon area has the largest number of warehouses (over 150) but they are relatively small (on average 8100 sq. m.), which can be explained by the local nature of the business: serving consumers in the Lyon area or for local production needs. Greater Lyon accounts for 30% of the total logistics premises in the Lyon urban area.

The Nord-Isère area is the strongest in logistics, with more than 2 million square meters and large-scale warehouses (on average 18,500 sq. m.) which receive and send goods well beyond the Lyon region.

The Plaine de l’Ain industrial park has about 520,000 square meters of warehouses and logistics represents one of its four main sectors of activity.

Edouard Herriot Port, France’s largest inland port for container shipments by all means of transport

The port has three main zones:

Terminal 1: 10 hectares of storage space and daily river shipments between Lyon and Fos sur Mer

Terminal 2: a 10-hectare platform with rail connections for trains up to 830 meters long and a capacity of 80 TEU

A private zone for 70 companies with connections to private docks, the railway and freeway.

CargoPort of Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport

It offers and unrivalled multimodal platform:

150 hectares for air cargo and connections to the railway and freeway

More than 1000 cargo professionals

24 companies

Onsite customs office

Direct access to rail and road

The association Lyon Carex, established in September 2008, is part of the Euro Carex network and contributes to the development of freight transport by high speed train between airport platforms around Europe, thanks to the extensive network of high-speed trains.

CargoPort is ideally located at the crossroads of air, road and rail networks, midway between northern and southern Europe.

Specialized storage areas

In addition to its freight infrastructures, CARGOPORT also offers a range of solutions for onsite storage: controlled-temperature premises (positive and negative cold) and premises for perishables and goods requiring special protection.

Two runways for any type of aircraft

720 square meters devoted to storage

150 hectares devoted to freight

Unrestricted access for Chapter III aircraft

Facilitated access to road transport

Attractive rates

Storage zones devoted to special types of goods: vaults, premises for radioactive goods, cold storage

Logistics cluster of the Rhône-Alpes region

Created in the Fall of 2009, the cluster aims to develop synergies among logistics professionals across the entire chain of the industry: industrial companies, logistics service providers, transporters, distributors, training and research organizations, local logistics associations and trade federations, centers of excellence and regional clusters, local authorities, transport operating and intermodal companies …

The idea is to design, model and disseminate logistics solutions of the future, to serve the industry and promote sustainable transport in the Rhône-Alpes region. The partners of the cluster join forces so that the logistics function – a key aspect of industry and commerce – can fully contribute to the value chain.

Goals: to encourage innovation in logistics technologies and operations, develop responsible environmentally responsible logistics, assist the implementation of training programs which meet the needs of logistics companies and boost skills development of employees, propose and experiment with new services to foster intermodal transport.

Logistics intelligence center Europe du sud (PIL'es)

With 1,600,000 square meters of logistics premises in its territory and nearly 12,000 jobs in the sector, Nord Isère is recognized around Europe for its expertise in the field of logistics. The association PIL’es mobilizes the business community and public authorities to promote the excellence of local logistics companies and professionals.

PIL’es acts as forum for debate, a tool for experimentation and joint work entirely devoted to the logistics professions, from operations to engineering, sub-contracting and facilities.

Goals: to improve the performance and competitiveness of member companies, create jobs, contribute to sustainable development, innovate and create the intelligent logistics of 2020.
