RESEARCH AND INNOVATION: R&D centers and international scientific clusters
Over the centuries, many Lyon natives have marked the history of science, art and creation: the Lumière brothers, inventors of cinema. André Ampère in the field of physics, Claude Bernard and Marcel Mérieux in the field of medicine, to name but a few. Lyon has always been a city of innovation and it continues to develop research centers and scientific clusters at the forefront of technology.

Research and development expenditure in the Rhône-Alpes region is comparable to that in Finland, Denmark or the Madrid/Barcelona regions combined.
Major research centers, foundations and scientific facilities are present in the region: Fondation Mérieux, Fondation scientifique de Lyon et du Sud Est, Fondation Rhône-Alpes Futur, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the French Nuclear Energy Commission (CEA), the Information Technology Electronics Laboratory (LETI), Minatec, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the French Petroleum Institute. LyonBiotech also set up in Gerland and in 2011 it was made a Technological Research Institute financed in part by France’s national loan. The cluster will work primarily in infectious diseases.
Lyon is also home to Lyonbiopôle, the international competitive cluster specializing in vaccines and diagnostics.
