A leading position in fields such as fiberglass and medial usage textiles has made the Lyon region the top center in Europe for Technical and Functional Textiles. The entire industrial chain is present in Lyon: from design to fibers, from customized to "mass-market" products.
The Lyon metropolitan area benefits from a rich network in Technical Textiles, thanks in particular to its innovative programs in higher education, specific to the textile and chemical business: e.g. Itech (Textile and Chemical Institute of Lyon), and to the presence of specialized research institutes and industrial technical centers, such as IFTH (French Institute of Clothing Textiles).
In 2005, the TECHTERA project (federating 40 labs and schools, 10,000 jobs and 140 companies) was certified as national competitiveness cluster for Technical Textiles. The aim is to organize the international promotion of businesses in the sector, to bring together heads of companies, researchers and higher education in order to foster innovation.
