Chemicals
The birthplace of the French chemicals industry, the Lyon region boasts many world leaders in various market segments, a wide range of companies in terms of core businesses and size, complete training solutions and an international competitive cluster, Axelera.

Chemical Valley, where globally renowned companies such as Rhodia, Arkema, Total, Air Liquide, Bluestar Silicones and IFP now operate, has made a sustainable transition to clean tech.
Lyon: sustainable chemicals:
- The Chemicals/Environment Competitive Cluster Axelera was founded by Arkema, Rhodia, IFP, the CNRS and Suez in 2005. Its aim is to accelerate the transition over to a cutting-edge chemicals industry that incorporates environmental protection through green design. 170 members have joined Axelera and 417 M have been invested in R&D projects in the region thanks to the catalyzing effect of Axelera. 5 strategic themes have been redefined for 2009-2011: the chemicals industry at the service of the major societal challenges; the preservation of natural spaces; total recyclability of materials; plant-based chemicals and the factory of the future.
- Research Cluster for Sustainable Chemicals and Chemicals for Health: run by Professor Jean-Marie Herrmann of IRCE Lyon, the Cluster uses 500 researchers and a network of regional laboratories to develop projects on 3 themes: cleanup processes, clean processes and bio-active molecules.
Plastics Processes: Plastics Valley is 100 km northeast of Lyon.
- 1,500 plastics companies complement each other: design and manufacture of tools, machine manufacture, polymer transformation, finishing, decoration, recycling, logistics and sales
- The plastics competitive cluster Plastipolis: the only plastics cluster in France. 210 members, 33 projects financed to the tune of 70 M. The clusters members contribute to innovative R&D projects and training in the sector.
- European Plastics Cluster: created in 1989 thanks to the desire of manufacturers to pool their resources and skills, the PEP is the technical center of the French plastics industry. Their activities focus on 4 areas: Advanced processes and tools; Real-time process control; Microstructures and Biomaterials.
