LYON, A CITY OF CULTURE
Beyond its rich history and exceptional heritage, Lyon is a city of culture and creation internationally recognized in many artistic fields including art, theater, dance, music and cinema.
The citys cultural calendar reflects a mix of events programmed by Lyons many cultural institutions, as well as large-scale festivals. Equally, the city boasts numerous cultural venues that are open to everyone, making Lyon one of the most culturally accessible cities in France.
That is why Lyon has been named Frances number 1 city for culture (outside of Paris) and indeed the citys culture is one of its main tourist attractions. Among Lyons excellent institutions are the Maison de la Danse, the Opera Hosue, the National Orchestra of Lyon, the Institut Lumière devoted to cinema, the Fine Arts Museum, the Célestins Theater, the Contemporary Art Museum and more.

Lyons cultural calendar is also marked by key events and international gatherings for every taste. For example, every year in September a Biennial festival takes place: the biennial dance and contemporary art festivals are held in alternating years, just before the annual Lumière Film Festival later in the autumn. The Festival of Lights illuminates the city in December, while in the spring, the whole of Lyon dances to the beat of the electronic music festival known as Nuits Sonores. In summer the Jazz Festival in Vienne and the Fourvière Nights festival make Lyon feel like a holiday destination.
